Surrounding Areas to Explore

There is a wealth of things to see and do in Andalucía, and here are some of our top recommendations.

If hiking is your passion, you’re in the perfect place. We’re located in the **Sierra de las Nieves** mountain range, which offers routes for all abilities—from full mountain-day adventures to gentle, scenic strolls.

Caminito Del Rey

Caminito del Rey

Just a short drive away lies the **Caminito del Rey**, an elevated trail that winds dramatically through the spectacular gorge at El Chorro. It’s **not one for the faint-hearted**, but for those who don’t mind heights, it offers an unforgettable experience.

Known as *“The King’s Little Pathway,”* this famous walkway clings to the sheer walls of a narrow gorge. Once considered one of the most dangerous routes in the world, it has since been fully renovated and is now a **safe yet exhilarating** trail that delivers breathtaking scenery at every turn. (Booking advised)

El Torcal de Antequera

El Torcal, located northeast of Álora, is a stunning nature reserve in the **Sierra Torcal** mountain range. This remarkable and truly unique landscape is known for its surreal limestone rock formations and is home to a wide variety of bird species as well as the iconic **Andalusian mountain goat**.

The area is wonderfully accessible for all abilities. Adventurous visitors can spend hours wandering through the extraordinary rock formations, perhaps with a picnic to enjoy along the way. For those who prefer a more relaxed visit, you can simply drive up to the **visitor centre**, where you can still take in the spectacular surroundings and experience the magic of El Torcal without a long hike.

Álora

Álora Town

Álora is a charming white-washed town nestled in the **Guadalhorce Valley**, its cobbled streets and churches cascading down the hillside of the **Sierra del Hacho**. The town has a rich history, highlighted by its impressive **Moorish castle** perched on a hilltop, offering panoramic views over the surrounding countryside.

Wander through the winding streets, soak up the warm Andalusian atmosphere in one of the many friendly bars, and indulge in traditional tapas. For a truly authentic experience, visit the local **Flamenco bar**, where you can enjoy live music and dance in an intimate setting.

El Chorro Lakes

If you’d like to escape the crowds at the beach, the **El Chorro Lakes** offer a perfect alternative. Here you can swim in beautiful, clean, turquoise waters surrounded by fragrant pine and oak forests. Park at *La Isla* to make use of the many picnic tables and enjoy a relaxing day by the water.

Whether you’re seeking panoramic viewpoints, peaceful forest trails, or the chance to spot local wildlife, this natural park has something for everyone.

Andalucia

There are countless **pueblos blancos** to explore—traditional whitewashed Andalusian towns where you can immerse yourself in Spanish culture and sample authentic local cuisine. Each village has its own charm, from quiet cobbled streets and sweeping viewpoints to lively plazas and artisan shops.

The **cities of Andalucía** offer something for every traveller. Ronda

Ronda

Ronda is one of the most stunning—and most photographed—towns in Andalusia. Dramatically perched on a plateau divided by the deep **El Tajo** gorge, the town is linked by the iconic **Puente Nuevo** (New Bridge), one of Spain’s most striking architectural landmarks.

Rich in history, culture, art, and spectacular scenery, Ronda offers plenty to explore. Wander through atmospheric streets lined with shops, restaurants, and traditional tapas bars, or simply soak in the panoramic views. It makes for a truly memorable and unique day to remember.

La Almazara Olive Oil Mill

If you’re visiting Ronda, consider booking a tour at this wonderful museum and working olive oil mill. Tours can be pre-booked and are well worth it, offering a fascinating insight into the skill and passion behind producing this Spanish “liquid gold.”

The mill itself is also an architectural highlight. Designed by renowned French architect **Philippe Starck**, the building is a modern-day classic that beautifully blends contemporary design and functionality with the pride, heritage, and culture of Andalucía. It’s an experience that combines taste, tradition, and remarkable craftsmanship.

Tres Cruces

Tres Cruces

The **Ermita de las Tres Cruces** is an 18th-century hermitage located at the meeting point of the Álora, Almogía, and Cártama regions. Its three naves represent the unity of these neighbouring villages. The hermitage also plays a key role in the annual **Verdiales festival**, a vibrant celebration of traditional music and culture held on the first Sunday in May.

It’s well worth the slightly hair-raising drive for the spectacular views alone, which stretch south to the Mediterranean and north toward the Sierra de las Nieves.

Andalusia Horseback Ride with Picnic

Explore the stunning Andalusian countryside on horseback, with a scenic stop to enjoy a wonderful picnic of Spanish wine, cheeses, and hams prepared by **Restaurante Cortijo de Arte**. It’s a truly magical experience that combines nature, local flavours, and unforgettable views. ££

**La Taberna del Caminito**

Our go-to spot for lunchtime tapas. Located in the heart of Álora, it offers great food, friendly service, and very reasonable prices. **€**

**El Cortijillo de Juan**
